SWSF Distributes $12,800 in Classroom Grants on Dec. 5

It was a welcome classroom interruption for 19 South Whidbey School District teachers as they received classroom grant checks totaling $12,810 Dec. 5 from members of the South Whidbey Schools Foundation. This is the most money awarded for teacher grants in the foundation’s 12-year history.

“We had some particularly innovative requests this year,” said SWSF Board President Dave Haworth, who dressed in a tuxedo to present the grants and was joined by SWSF Board member Becky Foote who handed out balloons.

“This year’s requests ranged from a high school science solar voltaic array project which is designed to produce electricity from solar panels to be placed in the high school parking lot, to an intermediate school musical production called ‘Character Matters’,” Haworth said.

One of the unique equipment requests was for two hand -crank powered laptops for student field trips which was made by Langley Middle School social science teacher and Adventure Ed advisor Nels Berquist. The $700 grant will also supply two students in Africa with the same type of laptops through a “give one, get one” special offer.

Other grants were awarded for a weather station at the middle school, to support the high school’s “College Knowledge” program, to fund a rainwater collection and storage program at the middle school, to start a music program at Bayview, and to modify last year’s winning solar dragster to enter the world competition again in 2008. Additional grants can be found below.

The South Whidbey Schools Foundation program has granted more than $60,000 since it was started in 1995. The grant disbursements follow the foundation’s successful September fundraising gala dinner which raised $20,000 for the nonprofit foundation.
